Separated from the Laborde house (welcoming pilgrims to Saint-Jacques) by a garden, the so-called Bishop's Prison is an emblematic place of the city with a unique history.
This current and recent appellation combines two distinct historical realities, the presence of bishops of the diocese of Bayonne during the Great Western Schism and the penitentiary vocation attested from the end of the 18th century. The monument is curious in its current state : the entrance to the pebble paving opens onto the guardhouse followed by fairly spacious and well-lit disciplinary cells.
A cramped staircase gives access to a vast medieval underground vaulted vault whose function of warehouse of goods would seem plausible. At the moment, an original evocation, a mysterious prison to escape... in the Middle Ages with the Pilgrim of Saint-Jacques.
