Visit Laguardia, a beautiful and festive city!

Here we are in the capital of Rioja Alavesa ! Laguardia is a superb medieval town that will seduce you as much by the charm of its alleys as by the good atmosphere that reigns there. It is an ideal starting point for wine tourism because all around its rocky promontory: vineyards as far as the eye can see and cellars , bodegas , where you can taste, discover, learn more about the wine of this terroir, watered by sunshine and little rain! On the way to culture and heritage !

Laguardia, a fortified city

What is fantastic about Laguardia is the quality of preservation of its magnificent ensemble dating from the ^10th century for its first foundations. Surrounded by ancient ramparts, you enter the city through one of its gates. Splendid palaces and buildings are visible on every street corner. The city is like a giant museum, but festive, lively and friendly !

You will notice that the architecture of the city draws on several eras and the different styles of classical, baroque, medieval intermingle delightfully. It is a journey through time at every turn!

There you will discover churches and fortified buildings, such as the Church of San Juan Bautista and the Church of Santa María de los Reyes. The Casa de la Primicia, dates from the 14th century. Laguardia is a real Gruyère, because like any good wine town , it has many cellars, which form an almost uninterrupted network of cellars and maze of underground passages. You can take a guided tour of the town with the Tourist Office or visit one of the bodegas (the wine cellars) of the town. The choice is vast, there are some in the fortified town but also all around.

What to do around Laguardia

• Laguardia is ideally located for a getaway to Alava. For a stay with family or friends, it offers a beautiful range of accommodation of all styles, small shops and everything you need to eat as well as many sports and leisure activities. We are close to the Ebro Valley and many outdoor activities are possible: canoeing, stand up paddle, mountain biking, hiking, climbing!
• Archaeological sites have shown that the origins of Laguardia are very ancient and even date back to the Neolithic period! You can learn more at the Tourist Office and some hikes allow you to follow in the footsteps of our ancestors through dolmens and other tumuli.
• The Lagunas de Lguardia are a protected biotope a few kilometers from the town, in the direction of Logroño. 4 wetlands suitable for observing birds and other small mammals. During the dry season, the lagoons may have evaporated, leaving only the salt and minerals, forming a white and cracked layer.
• About thirty minutes away, go for a hike on the Ruta del Agua (the water route), you won't regret it, it's magnificent and very surprising, unusual!
