We're taking you to visit the beautiful coastal town of Mutriku. A feast for the eyes and a real treat for the whole family. Between its old town center filled with colorful townhouses and sumptuous palaces, its pleasant beach in all seasons, its seawater swimming pools, and its charming cafes and gourmet restaurants, Mutriku is an ideal holiday destination in the Basque Country!

What is the Basque Coast Geopark ? Managed by an association, it's a grouping of several territories and towns, ensuring that tourism development goes hand in hand with the ecological, sustainable, and responsible growth of the region. Highlighting the natural environment, culture, and heritage, offering guided tours on foot or by boat, a multitude of initiatives are emerging thanks to this desire to share the region's riches in a way that respects everyone.

The historic center of Mutriku

Park on the outskirts of town (never within the town itself, it's expensive and complicated!) or near the port, and take in the stunning view of Mutriku Bay with its marina, fishing port, and beach, from which the town unfolds, cascading down the verdant hillside. Mutriku is located in western Gipuzkoa and was founded in the 13th century. Nestled against the flysch cliffs, its historic center is remarkably well-preserved! It's a medieval village with an inimitable charm, featuring delightful narrow lanes and staircases everywhere, leading up the hill to the higher ground. From the top of the town, the panoramic view is unparalleled.

The center of Mutriku is a listed historical monument. To explore it, we recommend picking up a map with explanations of all the remarkable houses and palaces from the 15th to the 18th centuries that you will admire there. Go to the Tourist Information Center in Churruca Square. Mutriku's history has always been linked to the sea; it is both a source of sustenance and an economic driver, and many great fishermen and sailors have passed through Mutriku. It is one of the oldest ports in the Bay of Biscay, and while this economy once brought renown to the town, today it is the pleasures of tourism that will draw you to Mutriku!

What to do in Mutriku?

  • Mutriku is not the most touristy of the villages on the Basque coast, take advantage of it! You will find information to organize your stay on the Mutriku Tourist Office website.
  • In July, don't miss the patron saint festivals of Las Madalenas which bring the village to life with celebration and excitement! Another remarkable celebration: the Kalbaixo festivals.
  • Mutriku has many restaurants. We enjoyed dining at one of them while taking in the view of the port and the bay opening onto the Bay of Biscay.
  • You can visit the Nautilus Museum, an interpretation center about the region's particular geology and fossils.
  • You can go scuba diving in Mutriku. The seabed is clear and interesting to explore. Of course, surfing is also a major activity in the area!
