The Bonnat-Helleu Museum in Bayonne reopens its doors after 15 years of silence

The Bonnat-Helleu Mus ...

November 27, 2025, will remain a memorable date in the cultural history of Southwest France. After fifteen long years of closure and a nearly five-year renovation project, the Bonnat-Helleu Museum, Bayonne's fine arts museum, will finally reopen its doors to the public. It is not simply a building that is coming back to life; it is one of France's most important collections of drawings that is reclaiming its place, offering the region a major and much-anticipated artistic center. The magnitude of the anticipation is commensurate with the exceptional richness of the collections it houses.

The weight of an exceptional legacy

The soul of the museum lies in the generosity of its founder, Léon Bonnat (1833-1922), a celebrated academic portraitist and native son. His monumental donation, consisting of nearly 3,500 works, including an absolutely exceptional collection of master drawings, placed Bayonne on the world art map.

Its collection includes works by masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt, and Goya. Furthermore, the institution, renamed Bonnat-Helleu in 2011 following the substantial bequest of works by the painter and engraver Paul Helleu, is a privileged partner of the Louvre : it is one of the largest custodians of the Parisian museum's collection. This has earned it the nickname "the little Louvre."

However, time had taken its toll. Closed in 2011 for safety and conservation reasons, the museum required a complete renovation to guarantee the preservation of these priceless treasures.

The construction site of metamorphosis

The renovation project was unprecedented in scale, with a dual objective: to preserve the historical identity of the site while projecting it into the 21st century. With a total cost of approximately 22 million euros, the project has doubled the exhibition space.

The modernization was comprehensive, focusing on bringing the museum up to environmental standards for preventive conservation, improving accessibility for all visitors, and completely redesigning the museum layout. The goal was to bring thousands of works held in storage out of obscurity and present them in a fresh and dynamic way.

A completely redesigned visitor experience

The reopening on November 27, 2025 marks the beginning of a new era. Visitors will discover larger and, above all, brighter galleries, allowing for a new interpretation of the collections.

Visitors will be moved to rediscover iconic masterpieces, such as Francisco de Goya's Self-Portrait with Glasses and Edgar Degas's Portrait of Léon Bonnat, as well as a wealth of works never before or very rarely exhibited. The new exhibition design also creates a dialogue between different periods and schools, offering a journey from Antiquity to the 20th century across three floors. The visitor experience and services (bookshop, educational spaces) are now commensurate with a museum of this stature.

This reopening is a tremendous boost for Bayonne, strengthening its appeal to tourists and its strong cultural identity. After waiting for this jewel to be transformed, it is time for everyone to once again cross its threshold and be captivated by the dialogue of the masters, finally restored.
