Sorgin Gaua in Ciboure: experience the Night of the Witches in early February

A mystical atmosphere, ancestral dances, and conviviality: on Friday, February 6th, the town of Ciboure will be enveloped in a unique atmosphere to celebrate " Sorgin Gaua," the famous Night of the Witches. Prepare your costumes, the gathering will be held in the village square!

What is Sorgin Gaua?

Literally "Witches' Night" in Basque, Sorgin Gaua is a popular celebration rooted in the legends and mythology of the Basque Country. More than just a party, it's a celebration that revives the legends and (sometimes dark) history associated with witchcraft in the region. Chase away the evil spirits of winter to welcome the soon-to-be- renewed spring in an explosion of joy and music.

Where and when does this take place?

Mark the date clearly in your diaries:

• When: Friday, February 6, 2026;
• Time: From 7pm;
• Where: Everything takes place in the Ciboure square (Ziburu), where a marquee is usually set up for the occasion;
• Price: Free.

Why is this festival a must-see in the Basque Country?

Sorgin Gaua is one of the highlights preceding Carnival (Ihauteriak). It symbolizes freedom and transgressive celebration. It's a time when the rules are reversed: people dress up, dance around the fire or to the rhythm of drums, and share a unique moment of communion.

The evening's program

From 7pm onwards, the square comes alive for an evening full of emotion:

• An aperitif, to start the evening in a convivial atmosphere.
• The parade: a mysterious procession where witches and mythological characters wander the streets.
• Mutxikoak: the famous Basque jumps to get all generations dancing together.

• Concerts under a big top: the evening continues with local bands and a festive atmosphere guaranteed until the end of the night.

Who can participate and how?

Everyone is welcome! Whether you live in the Basque Country or are just passing through, the festival is free and open to all.

How to participate? The best advice we can give you: play along! Come dressed as wizards, witches, or creatures of the night. Bring good shoes for dancing the mutxikoak and, above all, your best smile (or your scariest grin!).
