Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: a medieval fortified city in the heart of the Basque Country

Capital of Lower Navarre, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Donibane Garazi in Basque) owes its name to its geographical location at the foot of the passes or ports of the Pyrenees. The most famous of these is, without doubt, the Ibañeta/Roncesvaux pass, made famous by the legendary battle during which the rearguard of Charlemagne's army, commanded by Roland, was defeated by Basque fighters. This highly strategic position allowed Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to assume the status of a key city in the Kingdom of Navarre.

The richness of its historical and architectural heritage gives it an undeniable tourist attraction : a major destination in the Basque Country. Surrounded by walls, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is dominated by a citadel, a true jewel of military architecture, with its ramparts, moats and underground passages.
