    • Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: a medieval fortified city in the heart of the Basque Country

Capital of Lower Navarre, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Donibane Garazi in Basque) owes its name to its geographical location at the foot of the passes or ports of the Pyrenees. The most famous of these is, without doubt, the Ibañeta/Roncesvaux pass, made famous by the legendary battle during which the rearguard of Charlemagne's army, commanded by Roland, was defeated by Basque fighters. This highly strategic position allowed Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to assume the status of a key city in the Kingdom of Navarre.

The richness of its historical and architectural heritage gives it an undeniable tourist attraction : a major destination in the Basque Country. Surrounded by walls, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is dominated by a citadel, a true jewel of military architecture, with its ramparts, moats and underground passages. Vauban left his mark there both in terms of its architecture and its interior design. It protects the different districts of the city, the Garazi region and offers an incomparable panorama of the Nive valley and the surrounding mountains.

In Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, each building immerses the visitor in the past. Citadel, walls, Saint-Jacques gate (listed by UNESCO on the list of World Heritage of Humanity as part of the Routes of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle in France), Gothic church, Prison des Evêques, Mansart house... These are all invitations to discovery.

As you stroll through the cobbled streets of the historic heart, you will be charmed by the architectural heritage, particularly the beautiful houses in the traditional Basque style. The pink sandstone that brightens the facades, the lintels crowning the entrance doors, the half-timbering on the upper floors are some of the architectural characteristics of the city.

Want to see the town from a different angle? The Little Tourist Train of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is waiting to take you on some great rides!

The classification among “ The Most Beautiful Villages of France ” bears witness to this wealth and also rewards all the efforts undertaken to preserve, protect and enhance this heritage.

A land of many flavors, the city is a showcase of the territory thanks to its many local shops but also to the unmissable events, such as the weekly market on Monday and the market of Local Producers and Artisans. The producers of the villages of the Garazi mountains offer a very diverse range of local products (cheeses, Irouléguy wines, cider, pork and cured meats, charcuterie, pastries, honey or jams, etc.).

True to its tradition of hospitality, with nearly 60,000 pilgrims per year, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is an essential stopover on the Way of Saint James. It is a well-deserved stop before the formidable and dreaded climb of the Pyrenees towards the collegiate church of Roncevaux.

A very bad memory. While on vacation in Labenne, we decided to visit Saint Jean Pied de Port; on paper, it seemed quite nice. After an hour's drive, we arrived at the little train station that was supposed to take us through most of the town. After a 30-minute wait, the driver arrived. There were two women, my wife, my three children (one of whom is disabled), and myself. The driver refused to take us on the tour because there weren't at least five adults for the ride. He explained that the town council had decided this so as not to give the train a bad image by running with so few passengers. So we ended up doing the tour on foot with our disabled child. An hour later, we passed the train again, this time with only six adults among all the passengers. Remember, there were seven of us in total, and we were refused the tour. The staff at the tourist office were apologetic and understanding, but the driver was much less so. We won't be returning to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, and we won't be recommending you either. I won't be giving you any advice either. Best regards.
