    • In Basque, Urdazubi means "Water and bridge." Perched on a privileged site, at the gateway to the Kingdom of Navarre, the town of Urdazubi/Urdax is perfectly integrated into its surrounding forests and mountains. Places and people blend seamlessly here. History, nature, traditions, gastronomy, and sport are intimately intertwined.

On the French border at its Dantxarinea crossing and separated from the Baztan valley by the Otsondo pass, the village is nestled in a hollow on the banks of the Ugarana river which is crossed by several medieval stone bridges.

Founded in the 15th century under the auspices of the Monastery of San Salvador, the city only gained its independence and was declared free in 1774. Among Urdazubi/Urdax's main charms is the predominant architectural style of its buildings, which harmoniously combines a majestic character with traditional elements. The city streets are lined with houses bearing coats of arms, built by the Indianos, inhabitants who emigrated to America in the 18th and 19th centuries, where they prospered, and who, upon returning home, built sumptuous mansions.

In Urdazubi/Urdax lies the birthplace of Pedro Aguerre "Axular," one of the great writers in the Basque language, who lived in the 17th century and authored the famous work "Gero" (After), a major work of Basque literature. The village's main attractions include the ancient monastery of San Salvador, dating from the 11th century, the mill built between the 10th and 11th centuries, the magnificent Ikaburu caves, and an art exhibition, offering all the hallmarks of quality rural and cultural tourism.

Urdazubi/Urdax has seven districts: Alkerdi, Landibar, Leorlas, Telleria, Iribere, Larrainta and Dantxarinea.

A journey of approximately 9 km, which leads to the next stage in the Baztan Valley, before tackling the Belate Pass.

Urdazubi/Urdax is home to the former Pilgrims' Hospital, now a hostel. It's an ideal spot for hikers, with four marked trails starting from the town center. Furthermore, the villages of Xareta are connected by a trail called the "Pottok Trail." Small horses painted blue on stones mark the route, which winds through peaceful meadows and forests. This is an easy hike, suitable for families or those who aren't particularly fit.

Starting from the Urdax caves, follow the "pottok" in two possible directions: towards Zugarramurdi to reach Sare (approximately 8 km) or towards Urdazubi/Urdax to reach Dantxarinea and emerge at Ainhoa.

The local festivals coincide with Ascension and Pentecost in Dantxarinea. The second Saturday of August is Iron Day, with a reenactment of the arrival of ore from Biscay at the village forge, as well as a craft market followed by a meal with musical entertainment.

In summer, three days are dedicated to Basque pelota, focusing on three of its variations (xare, paleta, and cesta punta). These days conclude with a tasting of local products. Throughout the year, various events take place in the Dantxarinea commercial area.
