    • They were shaped by drops of water with wisdom, humility, and perseverance. These ancient caves shelter a stream, the Urtxume, and a story. We invite you to discover it through a 40-minute sound and light show, highlighting all the beauty and power of nature. According to legend, this is where the laminak lived, whose voices still seem to echo along the water that flows through the heart of the site.

The Urdax caves were inhabited by our ancestors during various periods of the Paleolithic and Mesolithic eras. In 1930, the renowned French speleologist Norbert Casteret discovered "a magnificent rock shelter," Berroberría, and "a cave with engravings," Alkerdi. At the end of a passage in the Alkerdi cave, engravings on a stalagmite are visible. They depict a bison, a deer, and possibly also a horse, and date back to the Upper Magdalenian period, approximately 13,000 years ago. However, it is currently impossible to view these drawings for conservation reasons.

We took the guided tour of the Urdax caves and absolutely loved it. The underground environment is truly breathtaking, with stunning formations that leave you speechless at every turn. The guided tour is definitely worthwhile, as they explain the history and secrets of the caves in a very engaging way. Plus, we found the entrance fee quite reasonable for the high quality of the experience. A must-see if you're in the area. We'll definitely be back!

A guided 45 minute tour through fully lit passage, stopping in larger chambers. The young Spanish guide gave us info sheets in English and pointed things out to us.
