They were shaped by drops of water with wisdom, modesty and perseverance. These age- old caves are home to a stream, the Urtxume , and a story. We invite you to discover it throughout a 40-minute “sounds and lights” journey, enhancing all the beauty and power of nature. According to legend, it is here that the laminak lived, whose echo of voices still seems to resonate over the water that crosses the bowels of the site.
The Urdax caves were inhabited by our ancestors during different periods of the Paleolithic and the Mesolithic. The famous French speleologist Norbert Casteret discovered in 1930 “a magnificent shelter under the rocks”, Berroberría, and “a cave with engravings”, Alkerdi. The Alkerdi cave houses, at the end of a corridor, engravings made on a stalagmite. They represent a bison and a deer and probably also a horse, and they date back to the Upper Magdalenian, around 13,000 years ago. However, it is currently impossible to contemplate these drawings, for conservation reasons.Downloads:
