Dating from the 12th century, the fortified castle of Mauléon a few kilometers from Béarn, Navarre and Spain, very quickly proved to be a site of extreme importance from a strategic point of view. Standing on a hill extending like a balcony over the Saison valley and benefiting from a bastide from the 13th century, it was considered in the 15th century as "the strongest castle in Guyenne sitting on its very high rock".
