    • Dating back to the 12th century, the fortified castle of Mauléon, located a few kilometers from Béarn, Navarre, and Spain, quickly proved to be a site of extreme strategic importance. Perched on a hill overlooking the Saison valley, and benefiting from a bastide (fortified town) as early as the 13th century, it was considered in the 15th century to be "the strongest castle in Guyenne, perched atop its very high rock." Inside, an exhibition recounts its tumultuous history, and wooden games are available for children. It offers an unmissable view of Mauléon, the Gave valley, and the Pyrenees.

    A beautifully restored castle ruin offering magnificent views over the valley and featuring interesting details inside. A self-guided tour, with a small entrance fee, is well worth it. Parking is limited, with only a few spaces available directly below the castle! It's best to park down in the village center and walk up.

    Well preserved and interesting fort, with excellent views up and down The Valley snd over mauleon-licharre. Very picturesque. Easy to walk to from the town.

    we drove to Mauleon today to see the castle. knowing the french have a long lunch break till 2pm we delayed our visit till 3pm and only then did we climb the steep hill by feet to visit the wonderful...
