Gorges de Kakuetta Nature Reserve in Sainte-Engrâce

In the heart of the Soule, the Kakuetta Gorges were dug by the Gave de Sainte-Engrace. They form an extraordinary landscape, renowned throughout Europe. Its high cliffs offer you breathtaking panoramas and its lush vegetation is particularly exotic. Some call the site "the Basque Amazon" . You can go climbing, hiking and canyoning here. These impressive cliffs have been fitted out with walkways. Passages and stairs were carved into the rock. 8 circuits allow you to discover the canyon. There is no particular difficulty, but hiking nevertheless requires being athletic and not feeling dizzy.

Did you know? The "gave" is a Gascon term, which designates a watercourse. Some are mountain streams, others are wide rivers. The gaves take their sources in the Pyrenean massif. They hurtle down the mountains and crisscross the Béarn valleys, Bigorre, Soule in the Basque Country and as far as Chalosse, in the Landes. The main rivers, so named, are the Gaves d'Ossau, Aspe, Pau, Oloron and Mauléon. They all join the Gave de Pau, which then takes the name of Gaves Réunis, before flowing into the Adour.
