N°3: The Urdaibai Nature Reserve

On the territory of Mundaka, is the mouth of the Oka River. This encounter between the river and the Atlantic Ocean creates an original environment and breathtaking landscapes. These brackish waters, half-fresh, half-salty, are conducive to the development of flora and fauna specific to this natural environment. You will therefore see particular aquatic species there. In addition, this food richness attracts many birds, to be observed with the family.

Did you know ? The mouth is the exchange zone between a river and the ocean. When the river is dominant, the mouth is called a “delta”. When the ocean is, it is called an “estuary”. The mouth of Urdaibai is an estuary.

The essentials to do on site:

  • Visiting the Bird Observation Center: The site is on the path of migratory birds. The center lists the species and allows you to get to know them better, thanks to the Marais Observatory, an open-air museum.
  • A hike in the Nature Reserve.
  • The Painted Forest of Oma : This forest is decorated with colorful works of art, which gives it a somewhat magical character!
  • The Cave of Santimamiñe and its interpretation centre: On the side of the Erenozar mountain, real scenes of history are told to you by cave paintings, in a one-hour guided tour.
  • The Txatxarramendi peninsula and the Urdaibai watchtower: At the heart of the mouth, this natural area allows for a pretty forest walk, with an unusual view of the estuary.
  • The beaches of Laida, Kanala and San Antonio, to relax with the family, in an idyllic setting.
