The historic center of Mutriku

Park on the outskirts of the city (never inside the towns, it's expensive and complicated!) or near the port, take in the superb bay of Mutriku with its marina, fishing port and beach , from where the city spreads out, spread out over the green hill. Mutriku is located in the west of Gipuzkoa , and was founded in the ^13th century. Nestled against the cliffs of Flysch, its historic center is extremely well preserved! It is a medieval village with an inimitable character with charming alleys (steep streets) and stairs everywhere to climb the hill and reach the heights. From the top of the city, the panoramic view is unparalleled.

The center of Mutriku is classified as a monumental site . To discover it, we recommend that you obtain a map with explanations of all the remarkable houses and palaces from the ^15th to the ^18th century that you will admire there. Meet at the Tourist Office on Churruca Square. The history of Mutriku has always been linked to the sea, it is a food resource as well as an economic one and great fishermen and sailors have passed through Mutriku. It is one of the oldest ports in the Bay of Biscay and if it was once this economy that made the city famous, today it is the pleasures of tourism that will lead you to Mutriku !

What to do in Mutriku

• Mutriku is not the most touristy village on the Basque coast, take advantage of it! You will find information to organize your stay on the website of the Mutriku Tourist Office
• In July, don't miss the patronal festivals of Las Madalenas which bring the village into celebration and excitement! Another remarkable celebration : the Kalbaixo festivals.
• Many restaurants are located in Mutriku, we enjoyed sitting at one of them enjoying the view of the port and the bay opening onto the Bay of Biscay.
• You can visit the Nautilus Museum, it is an interpretation center on the particular geology of the region and the fossils.
• Remember to bring your swimsuit to swim in one of the seawater pools or directly on the beach in the Cantabrian Sea.
• You can go scuba diving in Mutriku, the seabed is clear and interesting to discover. Of course, surfing is also a key activity in the region!
• Remember to bring walking shoes as many hiking trails are available in the region. It gets hilly quickly ! The GR 121 passes Mutriku.
• Visit Orio , which is not far from Mutriku !
