Mundaka, the surfing capital!

Are you on vacation in the Basque Country, in Biscay with a surfboard ? So head to Mundaka without thinking ! It is the Surfing Capital of the Basque Country. Its left wave is famous for its perfection, its 400m length and the 5m height it sometimes reaches ! It’s a place with a cool and relaxed atmosphere . From beginner to professional , there is something for all tastes and levels, when it comes to sliding at Mundaka !

Munkada in the middle of nature and spoiled by it!

Mundaka, whose origins date back to the ^10th century, is in a green setting and bordered by the Cantabrian Sea in the Ria Mundaka. The city is also located in the Urdabai Biosphere Reserve, a unique natural space with kilometers of sand that line the coast and marshes, exceptional reservoirs of biodiversity . Very popular with tourists from all countries, Mundaka is a cosmopolitan place. Pretty seafront, trendy stores and with lots of surf wear and board sports stores, its promontory attracts surfers as much as fans of seaside tourism.

The heritage of this pretty seafaring village is not to be outdone. Mundaka town hall, Santa Maria church, Larrinaga Palace... Walk from the port to the Santa Catalina hermitage which promises you a superb maritime landscape !

Mundaka hosts major international surfing competitions every year! Particularly in autumn.

What to do in Mundaka

• The June festivals in honor of Saint Peter are famous and it is an excellent time to discover this attractive village. Also on the last weekend of August are the Basque festivals of Euskal Jaiak, not to be missed under any circumstances ! At Carnival time, Mundaka puts on his celebratory costume for a big party that attracts thousands of visitors.
• Stroll along the seafront following the waters, you will enjoy superb views of the Urdabai River estuary.
• The port of Mundaka is surrounded by colorful Basque houses, there are small villages and pleasant cafes and restaurants for a drink, an aperitif or a meal of choice !
• The beach is pleasant in Mundaka, but the water can sometimes recede far away and you have to walk a lot to swim. The locals, young people and teenagers like to lounge in the sun on the dikes, the rocks and around the old port.
• The Santa Catalina hermitage is accessible after a short walk, on a small peninsula facing the sea.
