Oiasso Museum - Irun

Oiasso is much more than a museum. It is a space for culture and a door to travel back in time to the classical past. The activities programmed by the museum are aimed at all audiences and all profiles. Some, like the concerts or the debates, are held indoors while others settle in the square, take over other spaces or even travel to distant lands.

Where do you want to travel?

The museum opens the doors to the Roman town of Oiasso, its roman cemetery under St. Helen's chapel, as well as the mines of Irugurutzeta.

Under the current town of Irún, hides the Roman town of Oiasso. Located at the mouth of the Bidassoa river, on the border between Hispania and Aquitaine, Oiasso was, in antiquity, the port town of the Vascons. The town had thermae or roman baths, whose archaeological site will be soon musealized. Under the Roman Empire, belonging to the province that bore the name of Tarraconaise, the city became an important center of communications and trade in northern Hispania.

Sainte Hélène: The medieval hermitage of Sainte Hélène shelters the necropolis or cemetery of Oiasso. Urns filled with ashes were discovered there, as well as funeral kits that included ceramic vessels, bone hairpins called acus crinalis, and fibulae, to name a few pieces.

Irugurutzeta: Irugurutzeta. The heritage space of Irugurutzeta includes a set of mining galleries and mineral calcination kilns. To visit this space, visitors must book the visit in the Oiasso museum and come to natural space where the mining is located (Carretera de Meaka, 110) which will take them to the natural site where the mining is located. Museum guides will be just there to welcome you.
