    • Alberdi MakilaTraditional Basque sticks, handmade family crafts

The makila, or makhila, is much more than just a stick: it is a symbol of identity, respect and belonging to Basque culture.

It is used as a support for walking, during ceremonies or as a gift of honor.

Alberdi Makila represents three generations of Basque craftsmanship, two of which are exclusively dedicated to the manufacture of traditional makilas, in their workshop in Irún.

Each piece is custom- made using ancestral methods.

The medlar tree, used for over 300 years to make authentic makilas, offers a wood that is hard, flexible and light, ideal for a strong and functional stick.

In spring, the branches are marked with incisions; in winter, they are harvested.

      • Harvesting, heating, barking
      • Manual straightening
      • Drying for 5 to 10 years

Each piece of wood has unique reliefs, making each makila truly exclusive.

      Alberdi makilas are handmade with:

      • Aged medlar wood
      • Polished horn pommel
      • Braided leather or metal handle ( makila of honor )
      • Hand -engraved rings with Basque symbols
      • Steel tip
      • Size adapted to stature and use

It is possible to visit their workshop in Irun or order online.

I had the extraordinary privilege of visiting the workshop of Makilas Alberdi while traveling in the Basque Country, and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my trip. The team welcomed me warmly and generously took the time to show me their workshop and explain the process behind making a traditional makila. Seeing the craftsmanship up close was truly impressive — every detail reflects a deep respect for tradition and artistry. The makila I received is absolutely phenomenal. The quality, beauty, and weight of the piece are remarkable, and you can feel the care and heritage that go into every step of its creation. It’s not just a walking stick — it’s a work of art and a meaningful cultural object. I know I will use this makila for the rest of my life and cherish it always. I’m deeply grateful to Makilas Alberdi for preserving this beautiful tradition and for the kindness they showed during my visit. If you have the opportunity to visit their workshop or own one of their makilas, don’t hesitate — it’s an experience and a treasure you will never forget.
