About

  • English
    • Mauléon, capital of Soule is divided into two parts, on each side of the Saison river, on one side the Bastide and the fortress, on the other Licharre, the old town.

Created at the beginning of the 13th, and attached to the English crown until the middle of the 15th, the city will always remain deeply Catholic despite the progressions of Béarn Protestantism during the wars of religion. Mauléon will owe its economic boom in the 19th century to the manufacture of the espadrille, of which the city still provides the major part of the national production today! Visit the castle of Andurain de Maytie, Renaissance castle built at the end of the 16th century by Arnaud 1er de Maytie, Bishop of Oloron, the Fortified Castle, and in the surrounding area, the Sainte Blaise Hospital
