On the banks of the Adour River, Bayonne 's large public garden is composed of two very different sections. On one side, the Jardin Léon Bonnat is a classic French-style garden, with straight paths leading to a central fountain with water jets, in the pure French style of the early 20th century. On the other side, the Jardin René-Cassin is an English-style garden, with freer curves and a simple, bucolic pond. In the former, you can admire beautiful, perfectly coordinated flowering plants. In the latter, grasses and seasonal flowers give it a more natural appearance.
On the other side of Bayonne, Caradoc Park is particularly impressive for its centuries-old trees. The grounds of the former Caradoc castle were originally privately owned, and the species that comprise them are remarkable. Today, it is a popular public space, especially with families, as it features farm animals, an educational apiary, and playgrounds. The view of Bayonne, with the Pyrenees as a backdrop, is reason enough to linger.
While the Bayonne Botanical Garden is smaller, it's a truly unique place. Perched above the ramparts, it offers a distinctive view of the city below. In a Japanese-inspired atmosphere, you'll discover unusual plant species. The bamboo grove is also very refreshing. Its Asian furnishings and small bridge, spanning a pond with carp and turtles, create an exotic setting. It's an unusual escape and an invitation to travel.
We tested it for you the Botanical Garden of Bayonne.
In Anglet, the Parc du Maharin is a very natural, simple, yet very pleasant park. It's a wooded park with beautiful lawns, crossed by a small stream. You can enjoy walking or running there, while the children have fun in the playgrounds. And for the whole family to gather, picnic tables are available.
The Paul Jovet Botanical Garden in Saint-Jean-de-Luz is iconic because it brings together numerous local plant species. It is designed as a series of landscapes representing the Basque coastline. A section is also reserved for more exotic species. It has an educational focus and offers workshops, tours, and discovery outings for young people. But it is also very interesting from an ecological and scientific perspective. It's a walk or visit that the whole family will enjoy!

In Cambo-les-Bains, the Gardens of Villa Arnaga are a must-see. Around the villa dedicated to the artist Edmond Rostand, a collection of green spaces unfolds, both enchanting and harmonious. The poetic English garden is a haven for dreamers, who can let their souls wander along the flower-lined paths. The structured splendor of the French garden is an architectural masterpiece in itself. The wooded park is dotted with remarkable trees. Children will delight in the birds that roam freely there…
We take you on our tour of the sumptuous Villa Arnaga, in Cambo-les-Bains.
While the reputation of the Cambo-les-Bains thermal baths is well established, its Jardin des Thermes (Thermal Garden) is also well worth a visit. And for good reason! Bathed by the Nive River, it enjoys a mild climate, miraculous waters, and lush vegetation, with stunning tropical species and numerous palm trees. Whether you're a spa guest or simply a visitor, the stroll is delightful and free!
Just a stone's throw from the city of Bayonne, the Plaine d'Ansot is a Natura 2000 protected natural area. This marshland area offers excellent opportunities for observing wildlife, particularly numerous birds. To help you understand this unique place, you'll find a museum, a Maison des Barthes (Barnyard Center), activities, and guided tours. Plenty to enhance your visit! And don't forget your binoculars!
The commune of Arcangues benefits from two neighboring nature reserves. The Chourroumillas Pond Regional Nature Reserve is a very special wetland. Located near the Nive River, it comprises a pond and a network of streams, pools, and marshy meadows. If you are patient and observant, you will surely encounter European pond turtles and European mink, to name just a few of its star attractions! You will also find a multitude of birds, fish, insects, and more.
The Errota Handia Regional Nature Reserve extends this area with more forest and meadows surrounding Lake Errota Handia. They are barely 3 km apart, meaning the wildlife is virtually identical. However, the environment is still different, offering two distinct versions of the same ecosystem.
In Hendaye, the coastal path will lead you to the Château d'Abbadia estate. This setting of steep cliffs is impressive and reflects the constant confrontation with the power of the ocean. It is a protected natural site where you can discover the typical flora of the Basque coast and discreetly admire the ceaseless comings and goings of nesting birds. As a bonus, the view of the unusual Château d'Abbadia is exceptional.
This concludes our selection of parks and gardens in the Basque Country. But you will find many other natural sites both on the coast and in the Basque hinterland.
