Looking for must-see activities in Biarritz to plan your stay? Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees Mountains, this former seaside resort of Empress Eugénie has retained its elegance while becoming the European capital of surfing. Legendary beaches, 19th-century heritage, unique museums, Basque cuisine, and water sports: the city packs everything you need for a long weekend or a week-long stay into just a few square kilometers.

Whether you are travelling with family, friends or alone, here is our selection of 10 activities not to be missed during your visit to Biarritz.

What to do in Biarritz?

1. Relax on the Grande Plage in Biarritz

It's impossible to list the must-see activities in Biarritz without starting with its most iconic beach. The Grande Plage stretches through the heart of the city, between the Municipal Casino and the Hôtel du Palais, a former imperial residence that has become one of the symbols of Biarritz.

Fine sand, ideal waves for learning to surf, and a panoramic view of the ocean stretching as far as the eye can see: it's the natural starting point for any visit. In summer, the atmosphere is lively from morning till night. Out of season, the promenade along the beach remains pleasant for a stroll in the fresh air, whatever the weather.

Note : the beach is supervised during the summer season and easily accessible on foot from the town centre, making it a convenient landmark for planning the rest of the day.

Just a stone’s throw from the Grande Plage, on Place Georges Clemenceau, the Galeries Lafayette in Biarritz is housed in a historic building right in the heart of the town. It offers a range of leading fashion brands, cosmetics and gift ideas, in an elegant setting that provides a natural extension to a stroll along the seafront.

2. Visit the Virgin's Rock

The second must-see in the city, the Rocher de la Vierge (Virgin's Rock), overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Basque coast. It is accessed via a metal footbridge built at the end of the 19th century, originally attributed to Gustave Eiffel.

At the top of the rock, a statue of the Virgin Mary has watched over sailors since 1865. The site is particularly photogenic at sunset, when the low-angled light illuminates the Basque coast all the way to Spain in clear weather.

3. Sample Basque cuisine at the Biarritz Market Hall

Among the must-do activities in Biarritz for food lovers, a visit to Les Halles is essential. This covered market in the heart of the city brings together greengrocers, fishmongers, cheesemongers, and local producers. Here you'll find the staples of Basque cuisine: Bayonne ham, Pyrenees sheep's cheese, Espelette pepper, and freshly caught fish and seafood. Many stalls also offer pintxos to enjoy on the spot, in a friendly and lively atmosphere, especially on weekend mornings.

4. Climb to the top of the Biarritz Lighthouse

Built in the 19th century at the northernmost point of the city, the Biarritz Lighthouse remains operational and open to visitors. After climbing the steps to the top, the reward is well worth the effort: a 360° panoramic view of the Basque coast, from the Chambre d'Amour bay to the first foothills of the Pyrenees on a clear day.

At the foot of the lighthouse, the landscaped gardens invite you to extend your visit with a more tranquil stroll, away from the hustle and bustle of the centre.

5. Explore the City of the Ocean

For a fun family activity, head to the Cité de l'Océan. This museum, with its interactive exhibits, immerses visitors of all ages in the marine world: wave formation, ocean biodiversity, environmental challenges... Sensory experiences, simulators, and games make the visit accessible to everyone, making it an excellent option in case of inclement weather.

6. Learn to surf on the Basque Coast

Considered the birthplace of European surfing, Côte des Basques is one of Biarritz's most legendary spots. Consistent waves, a relaxed atmosphere, and views over the city's rooftops make it a must-visit, whether you're an experienced surfer or simply curious.

Numerous surf schools there offer courses for all levels, from the first time on a board to advanced training.

7. Travel to Asia at the Asiatica Museum

Another less expected facet of Biarritz's must-see attractions is the Asiatica Museum, dedicated to the arts and civilizations of Asia. The collection brings together sculptures, textiles, and ceramics from India, Nepal, China, and Tibet. Thematic exhibitions offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of these regions, a welcome respite from the seaside atmosphere of the rest of the city. It's a great cultural outing idea for the end of the day or on a rainy day.

8. Stroll around the fishing port

Nestled below the cliffs, Biarritz's fishing port is first discovered from the city's heights before being explored on foot. Once there, you can enjoy an authentic atmosphere far removed from the hustle and bustle of the seafront: colorful huts, the cries of seagulls, moored boats, and small terraces where you can savor seafood and the catch of the day. It's also one of the most photogenic spots in Biarritz, especially in the late afternoon.

9. Cycle along the coast

For a change of pace, the Vélodyssée offers a wonderful way to discover the Basque coastline in a different way. This cycle route follows the coast from Biarritz and allows you to reach neighboring beaches and even Saint-Jean-de-Luz at your leisure, enjoying ocean views and passing through the surrounding seaside resorts.

An activity accessible to the whole family, to be done as a short ride or as a day trip, with the possibility of renting a bike directly in town.
