Sakae in Biarritz: the soul of Japanese Izakayas in the heart of the Basque Country

Between the Atlantic Ocean and Japan, there's sometimes only a step… or a flick of the wrist. Since its recent move at the end of 2025 to a new, larger, and more immersive setting, the Sakae restaurant is redefining the Japanese bistro experience in Biarritz. Led by Léo and Alex, this place is an invitation to travel, where the precision of Japan meets Basque conviviality.

A little bit of Japan in Biarritz

The story begins in Nagoya, Japan's fourth-largest city. It was there, in the heart of the vibrant Sakae district (meaning "prosperity"), that Léo and Alex lived and worked in the Japanese restaurant industry. From this total immersion was born an indelible love for the culture of the Land of the Rising Sun and its popular cuisine, the kind shared in the warmth of the Yokocho, those typical Japanese alleyways lined with small restaurants.

Back in France, their ambition was clear: to capture this authenticity without altering it. After a successful first stop near the Gare du Midi in Biarritz, the adventure takes on a new dimension at the end of 2025. Sakae relocates to offer a more comfortable, more spacious, yet still vibrant experience. We promise you won't be disappointed!

A sensory immersion: Between Pop Culture and Tradition

Stepping through the doors of Sakae is like leaving Biarritz for a moment of pure bliss, without having to travel thousands of kilometers. Amazing, right? The decor is a clever blend of influences. Discover traditional Japanese elements with a tatami area seating 12, allowing you to experience authentic Japanese cuisine as if you were there.

Far from the minimalist zen clichés, the restaurant's decor transports you directly to Japan : manga figurines on the shelves, Japanese film posters adorning the walls, comic books within easy reach... Everything reflects modern and urban Japan.

The atmosphere is that of a true izakaya : a place of life, of the clinking of glasses, bursts of laughter and umami aromas escaping from the open kitchen.

Settling onto the tatami mats means accepting the need to slow down. You take off your shoes, absorb the texture of the woven rush, and your perspective shifts. The cleverly designed modular tables for two allow for both intimate tête-à-têtes and large gatherings of 12 guests, recreating the lively atmosphere of Nagoya evenings.

A short menu to delight the taste buds of young and old alike.

At Sakae, they don't bother with long, drawn-out menus. The philosophy of the place can be summed up in one word: quality.

"Homemade" products highlighted

The menu, which is updated every quarter according to the seasons, focuses on the essentials:

  • 4 carefully prepared starters to whet the appetite (with 2 vegetarian options as always).
  • 5 generous dishes, 2 of which are fully customizable according to your preferences or dietary restrictions.
  • Three exquisitely delicate desserts to conclude the journey.

The vegetables arrive every morning, guaranteeing a crispness and flavor that only proximity can provide.

Here, the cuisine is "popular" in the best sense of the word : it's accessible, yet executed with technical precision. The presentation of each dish is meticulous, because in Japan, as in France, we also eat with our eyes. Each plate is conceived like a painting: the visual splendor promises an explosion of flavors.

Even though the menu changes regularly, some classics remain at the top of the menu: crispy Gyozas or Ramen will delight you all year round.

The change of location has allowed for an expanded wine cellar. During your visit to Sakae, enjoy traditional beers and sakes, as well as the new menu of creative cocktails and mocktails, infused with Asian flavors (yuzu, ginger, shiso...), perfect to accompany the shared appetizers.

Pop culture blends with Japanese drinks

Adaptability, the luxury of simplicity

At Sakae, the welcome follows no pre-established script. Léo and Alex cultivate adaptability, a direct echo of Omotenashi, the Japanese art of hospitality with genuine care. The concise menu is a strength: it allows the chefs to pivot nimbly to accommodate your needs. Whether you are vegetarian or have dietary restrictions, the two customizable seasonal dishes become the canvas for a truly personalized culinary experience.

This flexibility is also the secret to their family-friendly approach. Rather than offering a fixed children's menu, the team prefers to adapt to the tastes of younger diners by adjusting the textures or seasonings of the freshest ingredients. It's this welcoming, barrier-free atmosphere, where the chef cooks "for you," that transforms this Japanese bistro into a place where you immediately feel at home, regardless of your dietary restrictions or age.

After this delicious meal, set off to discover Biarritz and its 10 tourist activities.
