Bayonne Cathedral: Seven Centuries of Stone and Faith

Before discussing pixels and projectors, we must consider the giant that houses them. The construction of Sainte-Marie Cathedral began in the 13th century. At that time, Bayonne was a bustling crossroads, a stronghold contested between the French and English crowns.

Its radiant Gothic architecture wasn't built in a day. It took several generations of passionate artisans to erect its spires and sculpt its cloister, now recognized as one of the most elegant in France. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bayonne Cathedral is an essential stop for pilgrims on the Way of St. James. This monument, guardian of Basque identity for over 700 years, serves as the backdrop for Luminiscence.

The Luminiscence concept: a high-precision technological immersion

Luminiscence doesn't simply project images onto walls. The project relies on meticulous digital craftsmanship: a 3D model created with centimeter-level precision. This accuracy allows the projections to highlight every rib, every broken arch, and every stained-glass window, creating the illusion that the building breathes and transforms before your eyes.

For 45 minutes, immerse yourself in an epic tale. The 360-degree video mapping takes you through eras of splendor, but also periods of turmoil, symbolizing the cathedral's resilience through the ages.

The heart of the show: Anne Etchegoyen and the Basque voices

What makes the Bayonne leg of the tour truly unique is its local focus. The narration isn't entrusted to just anyone: it's the voice of Anne Etchegoyen that guides the audience. A singer-songwriter from the Basque Country, she rose to fame with her rendition of La Marseillaise at the Stade de France during the 2003 World Athletics Championships, and is known particularly for her gold-certified album, Les Voix Basques. The artist brings the authenticity and emotion characteristic of contemporary Basque song.

But the sensory journey doesn't end there. The show is enhanced by:

  • A regional choir live: every weekend, the voices of the Bayonne Pays Basque Choir vibrate live under the vaults, directed by choirmaster Jordi Freixa.
  • Respect for traditions: from the opening, the Basque song Agur Jaunak, performed a cappella, reminds us that we are here at home, in the heart of Basque identity.
  • Natural acoustics: the sound system has been designed to match the sacred resonances of the nave, enveloping you in a bubble of music.
