Located in the heart of the historic district of Grand Bayonne, the Sainte-Marie Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic art, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela.

A bit of history

Its construction began in the 13th century on the remains of an old Romanesque church destroyed by fire. It spanned several centuries, which explains its rich and varied architecture. Notably, its two iconic spires, which rise 70 meters above the city, were only completed in the 19th century by the architect Émile Boeswillwald, a disciple of Viollet-le-Duc.

Architecture and Treasures

• Rayonnant Gothic style: it is inspired by the great cathedrals of northern France (such as Reims or Soissons), with its high vaults and elegant nave.
• The Cloister: Adjoining the cathedral, this 14th-century cloister is one of the largest in France. It is a true haven of peace in the flamboyant Gothic style.
• Stained Glass and Paintings: It houses magnificent Renaissance stained glass windows as well as richly decorated chapels, some of which retain 19th-century mural paintings.
