    • This fabulous museum in Tolosa (Gipuzkoa) offers a tour of the historical evolution of chocolate making. A history that spans more than five centuries. During the visit, you can discover grinding stones and all kinds of primitive tools, some of them pre-Columbian.

      A special highlight is Juan Ignacio Garmendia's renovated workshop, one of the first electric workshops in the Basque Country. The visit concludes with a viewing of the documentary "Txokolatea" in a space adjacent to the museum where workshops, tastings, and chocolate sampling are offered.

      It's a small museum with a lot of history that captivates and makes you understand the importance of cocoa to the Basques.


      Museum visits

      AVAILABILITY RESERVATIONS

      From February to October.
      From November to January, both inclusive, reservations are not accepted for guided tours, workshops, or tastings. Free admission is available.

      FREE VISIT

      Throughout the museum, there are five areas with an information panel in each. This panel contains a QR code, through which visitors can view a video in which Rafa explains the machines and utensils in that area. At the end of the tour, the documentary TXOKOLATEA will be shown, which tells the story of cacao and chocolate. A complimentary chocolate bar is included.
      DURATION: 50 Min - 1 Hr. Approximately.

      GUIDED TOUR

      The museum is visited by Rafa Gorrotxategi and his son, Armintz Gorrotxategi, who will explain the history of the machines and utensils found in each area. The documentary TXOKOLATEA will conclude with a screening. At the end of the tour, visitors will enjoy hot chocolate.
      DURATION: 1 Hr. - 1h15 Min. Approximately.

      Chocolate workshop

      First, visitors will create a series of chocolate crafts (personalized bars with different ingredients, lollipops, chocolate rocks, etc.). Afterward, they will tour the museum with Rafa Gorrotxategi or Armintz Gorrotxategi. Finally, there will be a screening of the documentary TXOKOLATEA.
      DURATION: 1hr.15min. - 1hr.30min. approximately.

      TASTING + GUIDED TOUR

      The tasting is divided into three sections: First, a reception at the shop is followed by a screening of a documentary about how chocolate was made in the 17th century. Once the documentary is over, the chocolate tasting begins, from the cocoa bean through the three main chocolates to cocoa butter, to explore and analyze the differences between them. Finally, there is a visit to the chocolate museum led by the Gorrotxategi family, where you can see the machinery from centuries past and immerse yourself in the history of this world.
