Amuitz, the mythical island
The island Amuitz is located at the cape of Higer, near the lighthouse. It has a small surface, the largest parts are 150×70 metres in size and the maximum height is 10 metres above sea level.
The legend tells...
As the old legends tell, in the time of the Romans there were fig trees on the island. The fauna that can be found on the island itself varies, ranging from lizards, field rats and sea birds.
The old fishermen of Hondarribia used to call ‘Amuko’ to the tip of a stone and also ‘Xaxiarri’ to a part of the island, which can be found there.
As a result of the bad weather in winter, as it was impossible to go out to sea to fish, the families would look for their daily bread both on the island of Amuitz and along the coast of Jaizkibel.
They used the ‘Agaya’, a rod that came in two parts and was used to catch fish such as dentex, common mullet, sea bass, tilapia and various other fish.
