Surfboards by PETA and Commune Des Vagues
An authentic immersion in surf culture on the Franco-Spanish border
Nestled in the charming coastal village of Hendaye, a stone's throw from the ocean, lies a hidden gem beloved by surfing enthusiasts : Surfboards by Peta and the local brand Commune Des Vagues. This unique location houses one of the few workshops where handcrafted surfboards are created daily in the heart of the Basque Country. Founded by Eduardo, affectionately known as " Peta," and designer Ronnie Reyes, this workshop exudes authenticity and perfectly embodies the spirit of surf culture in a region rich in breathtaking landscapes.
A philosophy of hand-shaping
Peta's story begins in San Diego, where he learned the basics of surfboard shaping from iconic figures like Josh Hall and Skp Frye. It was there that he developed a true passion for this craft. After traveling the world in search of the perfect wave, he returned to his native Basque Country and began shaping his own boards under the name "Peta." His first workshop opened in Hondarribia, but he quickly moved to Hendaye Plage, where he now shares his workspace with his faithful dog, Litmus.
For PETA, even though computer-controlled (CAD) machines allow for faster and cheaper production, each surfboard deserves personal attention. He is convinced that hand-shaping gives the board a true soul. It all begins with a small spiritual ritual, a blessing before each creation. Visitors can often catch a glimpse of him at work through the window, a mesmerizing scene for any surf enthusiast.
Produce just what is needed, and well
La Commune Des Vagues is a family business, founded in 2024 and proudly based in Hendaye. At its helm is Ronnie Reyes, who brings 25 years of experience in surf industry design. Originally from California, he settled in the Basque Country in 2015 with his family, drawn by the quality of life and local values, where nature and community are central to everything. These influences inform the brand's philosophy: to produce only what is necessary and to do it well. All products are designed in France and manufactured in Europe in small batches, adhering to strict quality standards.
