Located in the Baztan Valley in Navarre, Amaiur, or Maya in Spanish, is famous for its heroic resistance to the Castilian army in 1522. Although it is small in size, it holds an important place in the hearts of the Basques due to its role in the history of Navarre.

A complicated past

Amaiur is best known for being the scene of a historic siege. The castle of Amaiur, then the last independent bastion of the Kingdom of Navarre, resisted the Castilian troops for months. This resistance symbolizes the struggle of the Basque people to preserve their independence and cultural identity. Unfortunately, the castle was finally conquered, marking the end of an era and the integration of Navarre into the Crown of Castile.

Today in ruins, the building remains an important place of memory.
