Café Ttipia, Basque for "little café", is located in the heart of one of France's most beautiful villages, Saint Jean Pied de Port. Chef Michel Ibargaray is a native of the region. After learning his trade at the Hôtel du Palais in Biarritz, he continued his training in Paris with top chefs Alain Dutournier and Christian Etchebest.

He has now returned to his hometown to take the reins at Café Ttipia. The chef's cuisine is generous, modern and traditional, with an emphasis on local Basque produce.

Regulars of all generations mingle with visitors to this brasserie with its lovely terrace on the banks of the Nive river.

The friendly service and generous cuisine create a warm atmosphere that has made Café Ttipia a veritable institution in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and the Basque Country.

Nice spot by the river. Dining room looks austere from the outside but was comfortable inside. Staff kindly adjusted some dishes for vegetarians in our group and produced delicious plates of vegetables with omelettes. Only reason for not giving 5* is that the steaks were way underdone (asked for medium rare but they were very rare). I would have returned them if my French were better. Summary: Would recommend and would return.

We were seated outside which was fine as it was away from the busy road. The server was very inattentive to our table of three women but attentive to those with men. She eventually came and took our order. We all ordered the special which was burgers, fries and salad. When they finally arrived my burger was cooked to about medium which I could eat. My table mate’s burgers were totally raw in spots. The sent them back to be cooked more. I finished my burger before they got theirs back and they were still undercooked. I will definitely not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal here. It was recommended to us by a local guide and it did not disappoint. We enjoyed a lamb dish and a pork dish and both were quite tasty. Service was excellent!

Terrible, was seated and then ignored for 15 minutes unless you consider the flies that hounded us. 6 staff totally ignored us. To top it off when we got up to leave they mocked us…

We sat for 15 mins while wait staff clearing tables and putting out “reserved” signs for dinner studiously ignored us. Figured we’d get a drink quicker if we just went back to our hotel. The worst...

Lovely place beside the river, with nice food and good service. Lots of locals eating there which is always a good sign. Go for the daily special if possible - the steaks are pretty good too
