Directions Explore Océan - Responsible whale watching - Expeditions & aperitifs at sea

About

  • English
    • Embarking with Explore Ocean aboard its catamaran Atalaya means experiencing an unforgettable sea voyage departing from the port of Hendaye.

Since 2018, this socially responsible company has been offering three types of outings to discover the Basque coast from a unique perspective.

      The Cetacean Expeditions

Much more than just a simple boat trip, this excursion allows you to observe cetaceans in their natural environment and to participate in the collection of scientific data for the preservation of these majestic species.

At the crack of dawn, the catamaran Atalaya sets sail, taking its passengers out to sea to encounter dolphins and whales. The team, comprised of observers, photographers, and a certified naturalist guide, accompanies the participants throughout this expedition.

During this day at sea, everyone learns to recognize the different species evolving in the Bay of Biscay: their history, their lifestyles, their characteristics, but also the essential actions to protect and preserve them.

The boat is certified as " Responsible Whale Watching " and holds the Blue Flag, and its respectful and non-intrusive approach enhances the whale watching experience. Following the expedition, the collected data is added to the national database of Pelagis (National Observatory of Marine Mammals and Birds).

      Prices: €110/person (ages 5 to 11) / €145/person (ages 12 and up)

      Waterside Aperitifs

Evenings by the water always offer special moments to relax with a drink.

Explore Ocean offers the opportunity to embark on the catamaran for an aperitif accompanied by local tapas, while cruising along the coast with breathtaking views of the Basque mountains : La Rhune and the Three Crowns, enhanced by the colours of the end of the day.

This 2-hour excursion offers the opportunity to discover Txingudi Bay and the Bidassoa River estuary, which marks the natural border between France and Spain. Participants will see Hondarribia (Fontarrabie) on the left bank, with its fortified old town overlooking the bay and its active fishing port, as well as Capo del Figuier, the easternmost point of the Cantabrian Sea. Along the 3 km of Hendaye's expansive beach, you'll also observe the "Two Twins," limestone rocks rising from the sea that bear witness to the coastline's constant erosion.

Whether with friends or on a romantic outing, this aperitif by the water in a friendly atmosphere guarantees an unforgettable evening.

      Prices : €35/person (under 12) / €39/person (12 and over) - from June to September

The Corniche seen from the sea

In association with the CPIE Littoral Basque, Explore Océan offers the opportunity to discover or rediscover the Basque Corniche as seen from the sea.

This 2.5-hour boat trip between Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz reveals 500 million years of Earth's history. Led by the CPIE Littoral Basque's project managers, this outing helps you understand how marine and terrestrial zones have succeeded one another over millennia to shape the present-day landscape. The cliffs, the rocks, their colors and shapes unveil the geological secrets of the Basque coast.

Starting from Hendaye, at the exit of the Bidassoa river, participants admire the Château d'Abbadia from a unique viewpoint, discover the Two Twins of Hendaye from a new angle, and enjoy a spectacular view of the Basque mountains: La Rhune, the Three Crowns, and the Fort of Socoa at the entrance to the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

This unique perspective of the coastline, in a wild and preserved setting, allows us to better understand current issues such as coastal erosion which threatens the coastal path between Ciboure and Hendaye.

      Prices : €34/person (under 12 years old) / €37/person (12 years and older)
