About

    • Mauléon-Licharre is the capital of the smallest province of the Basque Country, Soule. But it is also famous for being the capital of the espadrille. Mauléon and its fortified castle are built on the right bank of the Gave de Mauléon (called the Saison), the district of Licharre is located on the left bank. The two municipalities merged in 1841.

Standing on a small hill, the fortified castle overlooks the city and reveals the most beautiful view of Mauléon. It is possible to visit both shores on foot, by parking not far from the tourist office in the "heart of town" car park. It takes 15 minutes to walk to reach the castle, the road is short but steep.

In Mauléon you can find your pair of espadrilles directly from a manufacturer, dive into the world of the fortified castle of Mauléon, stock up on local products at the market on Saturday mornings, visit the castle of Andurain, learn to best of Basque cakes or even taste local cheeses or go on a treasure hunt to discover the city in a fun way...
