Where to picnic in the Basque Country? Our best spots, on the French and Spanish sides

Between the Atlantic Ocean, verdant hills, and peaks overlooking the border, the Basque Country abounds with places to spread out your checkered tablecloth. Whether you're looking for a sheltered beach near Bayonne, a shady garden in San Sebastián, or a summit with views of both sides of the Basque Country, here's a selection of picnic spots on both the French and Spanish sides.

Why is the Basque Country an ideal playground for picnics?

The Basque Country boasts a wealth of advantages: a coastline dotted with beaches and coves, a hilly hinterland with plenty of picnic areas, and local cuisine that's perfect for a quick bite. From sheep's cheese and Bayonne ham to Basque cake, pintxos, and txakoli, a Basque picnic basket rivals any restaurant. And since the French-Spanish border can be crossed in just a few minutes, it's easy to combine both sides in a single day.

Where to have a picnic in the French Basque Country?

On the coast, between Bayonne and Hendaye

For a picnic with your feet in the sand, several beaches on the Basque coast offer a pleasant setting and enough space to settle down comfortably.

• Hendaye beach : the last beach on the French side of the Basque coast, it is renowned for its large expanse of fine sand and its view of the Deux Jumeaux rocks.
• Erretegia beach, in Bidart : close to the city centre while retaining a preserved natural setting, with a large expanse of sand to spread out your blanket.
• Milady beach in Biarritz : very popular with the locals, it has a promenade along the seafront and a playground, making it a good choice for a family picnic.
• Chambre d'Amour beach, in Anglet : last beach on the Silver Coast before the Basque Country, pleasant for lunch facing the ocean.

In the heart of nature, in the hinterland

For those who prefer the shade of a forest or the panoramic view from a summit, the Basque hinterland has many opportunities for short hikes ending with a picnic.

• Lake Xoldokogaina (Lake Ibardin) : accessible from the Ibardin pass via a wide path through the forest, this site is particularly pleasant in spring and autumn. Pottoks, the famous Basque wild ponies, are sometimes seen there, and the dam offers a view over the valley.
• La Rhune : a symbol of the Basque Country, its summit can be reached from Ascain, Olhette, the Saint-Ignace pass, or Sare, either on foot (approximately a 2.5-hour climb) or by cog railway from the Saint-Ignace pass. The panoramic views of the Pyrenees and the ocean more than justify the effort.
• The Three Crowns : clearly visible from the beaches on the French side, these three peaks, rising between 800 and 836 meters, are actually located on the Spanish side, in the hills above Irun. The hike, accessible despite the altitude, offers a view stretching from Spain to the Landes region of France.
• Intzola, in Urrugne : a path once used by smugglers, which runs alongside a river in the shade of trees before emerging on the Spanish side. Ideal for families on hot days.

The designated picnic areas

For easier access to picnics, without the need for a prior hike, several towns in the inland Basque Country have created dedicated picnic areas, often free of charge and equipped with tables, a water point, and sometimes shelter in case of rain. This is the case, for example, at the Saint-Sauveur chapel in Jatxou, which is shaded and fenced, or at other sites listed by the Béarn Pays Basque tourist office throughout the region, from Béarn to Lower Navarre.

Where to have a picnic in the Spanish Basque Country?

The Spanish Basque Country, or Euskadi, is only a few minutes from the border and is just as worth a visit for a picnic, especially around San Sebastián (Donostia) and Fontarrabie (Hondarribia).

In San Sebastian (Donostia)

• Monte Ulía : beyond Zurriola beach, this wooded hill , a protected natural area, overlooks the town between the Gros and Pasajes districts. Its trails between forest and cliffs include several picnic areas and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Cantabrian Mountains.
• Aiete Park (Parque de Aiete) : a landscaped garden designed by the French architect Pierre Ducasse, featuring a lake, waterfalls, and a wide variety of trees. It also has a children's playground and an outdoor café for those who prefer to enjoy a picnic on site.
• Cristina Enea Park : a short distance from the city centre, this park crossed by waterfalls is a sure bet for a quiet moment in the shade of large trees.

In Fontarrabie (Hondarribia)

• La Millonetis Park : this botanical garden, home to some thirty species of trees and shrubs, is less than 20 minutes by car from Hendaye, just across the border. A peaceful setting for a picnic surrounded by nature, without having to venture far from the French coast.
• Hondarribia beach : at the eastern end of Gipuzkoa, facing the border, it combines sea, history and privileged views of Txingudi Bay.

Around Txingudi Bay

The Txingudi Bay, shared between Hendaye on the French side and Hondarribia/Irun on the Spanish side, is an excellent place to organize a cross-border picnic : for example, you can have a picnic on the French side at Belcenia Park in Hendaye, before crossing the border to extend the walk to La Millonetis Park or towards the heights of the Three Crowns.

What to put in your Basque picnic basket?

A good Basque picnic is ideally prepared with local products, bought that very morning at a local market:

• Sheep's cheese (ossau-iraty) and Bayonne ham for a simple and effective platter;
• Basque cake, plain or with black cherry from Itxassou, for dessert;
• A few pintxos or a tortilla if you're on the Spanish side, easy to transport and to enjoy cold;
• A chilled txakoli to accompany everything, as a light alternative to wine.

Practical advice before you leave

• Check access and facilities : some picnic areas in the countryside (like the Abbadie estate in Hendaye) do not have dedicated tables, but in return offer an exceptional natural setting to settle wherever you like.
• Anticipate the summer crowds : the most accessible beaches (Milady, Chambre d'Amour, Hendaye) are very busy in July-August; opt for an early morning arrival to find a good spot in the shade.
• Take all your waste with you, including organic waste, especially to protected natural sites such as La Rhune or the Abbadie estate.
• On the Spanish side, no special procedures are needed to cross the border: an identity document is sufficient, and the journey between Hendaye and Hondarribia takes about fifteen minutes.

Along the French coast or as far as San Sebastián and Hondarribia, the Basque Country offers a rare diversity of settings for a simple picnic: sheltered beaches, historic gardens, mythical peaks, and landscaped areas in the heart of the countryside. Enough to create, throughout the seasons, a gourmet itinerary on both sides of the Bidassoa River.
