Directions Bidart - A village nestled between the mountains, ocean and countryside in the Basque Country

About

  • English
    • In the heart of the Basque Coast, stretching along a 5km coastline and on the side of cliffs, the village of Bidart is ideally located to (re)discover the Basque Country and immerse yourself in the art of living specific to our destination.

At the Crossroads - "Bide Artean"
The etymology of Bidart, the contraction of the words "bide" (path) and "artean" (at the crossroads) defines the village "at the crossroads", at the crossroads, at the meeting of the coastal path and the mouth of the Uhabia river.

Its motto "Bidartean zuzena onena" means "at the crossroads, the straightest path is the best" says a lot about the strong character inscribed in the DNA of the people of Bidart.

      In Bidart, we are expected
Bidart has not escaped the development linked to the attractiveness of the Basque Country and has, over time, transformed into a small town that has managed to retain its village charm. Proof of this lies in the recently renovated Place Sauveur Atchoarena, which is also the beating heart of Bidart, where one can experience a local, natural, and authentic atmosphere.

Here, many establishments are family-run, sometimes passed down from generation to generation, each striving to be relevant to its time while respecting the work of their predecessors. Transmission, sharing, and hospitality are core values of Basque culture, and... choosing Bidart as a holiday destination also means choosing to stay with someone, learning a little more with each visit about our village and the Basque Country.

      Expertise
Here you will discover unique skills such as the work and creations of Basque cutlers, the Ona Pilota workshop of Basque pelota champions Jon & Patxi Tambourindeguy who manufacture and repair Basque pelotas and chistera gloves, the pastries and bakeries of the Moulin de Bassilour which smell of flour and snacks of yesteryear.

Taking the time for everything & also for doing nothing
When you come here on holiday, you have 1000 possibilities to keep busy: sports activities, cultural visits, gastronomic discoveries, group or private activities, guided or independent, there really is something for everyone.

And it is also possible to do nothing, to let yourself be lulled by the rhythm of the holidays, the sound of the waves, the sound of the church bell, the aromas of the restaurants, the colours of the market stalls, the views of the mountains and the figures of the surfers on the spots.
