FIRST INDEPENDENT WINEMAKER IN IROULÉGUY

Maison Brana is one of the great winemaking stories of the Basque Country. It all began in 1984, when Jean Brana created the first independent estate in the Irouléguy AOP and revived white wine production in the appellation. A foundational act, in one of the smallest appellations in France, that would leave a lasting mark on the Basque wine region.

Located between Ispoure and Bussunaritz, a few kilometers from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the Domaine covers 18 hectares cultivated mainly on narrow terraces, on slopes that sometimes reach a 65% incline. A mountain vineyard landscape, shaped by hand, which demands manual labor and constant attention to each plot.

Grape varieties rooted in the terroir

For the reds, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, and two long-forgotten indigenous grape varieties, Arrouya and Erremaxaoua, replanted by the House, produce wines ranging from fragrant elegance to robust power, including more delicate expressions with aromas of small mountain fruits. For the whites, Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, and Petit Courbu create fresh and aromatic wines with notes of peach, lychee, and white flowers.

A commitment to biodiversity

Respect for the environment is a long-standing conviction at Domaine Brana. After a long experience in sustainable farming and a gradual conversion, the Domaine has been certified organic since 2024. On the 18 hectares of terraced vineyards, many different plant species and several dozen bird species coexist with the vines, testifying to a preserved ecosystem and a viticulture that takes the time to do things right.

This summer, come and discover the vineyard

From July 2nd, the Domaine opens its doors to visitors, Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 am to 6 pm. Nestled among terraced vineyards and offering panoramic views of the Basque mountains, it's a wonderful way to understand the origins of these wines. Les Terrasses Brana allows you to extend your visit with a glass of wine from their à la carte menu, accompanied by local products to enjoy. A shop is also on-site where you can purchase your bottles to take home.
