Blue Cargo, from aperitif to sunrise

Last week, we stopped off for a gourmet treat at Café Rhubarbe, the Bayonne-based speciality coffee shop where Laurent works his magic with the finest market produce. This week, we’re laying out our towel on Ilbarritz beach.

Blue Cargo, from aperitif to sunrise

On Ilbarritz beach in Bidart, the legendary Blue Cargo has been given a new lease of life under the management of two brothers. From morning coffee to dancing under the stars, a whole day overlooking the Atlantic.

Next stop, Bidart, with a stop on Ilbarritz beach to rediscover Le Blue Cargo. This legendary establishment has just undergone a transformation under the guidance of two brothers, Paul and Baptiste, who previously established a venue in Noirmoutier, followed by a barge and a Parisian terrace at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Deeply attached to the Basque Coast, the two brothers spent every summer there with their grandfather in Biarritz. Taking over Le Blue Cargo was therefore a natural step, a clear return to their roots. Now, the restaurant offers a menu that accompanies the day from morning till night:

Facing the sunset, the venue now offers a menu that punctuates the entire day : morning coffee, a sun-drenched lunch, and tapas at dusk, followed by a carefully curated musical program as night falls. The spirit of the Basque Coast is expressed here in a relaxed and elegant style, amidst warm sand, an endless horizon, and the sounds of the sea. You come for the atmosphere, you linger for the moment that stretches out.

At midday, the experience is best enjoyed barefoot in the sand, beachside, while the cuisine unfolds a sun-drenched symphony inspired by the local area. Settle in facing the waves and choose between a Caesar salad, a lobster club sandwich with crispy fries, or line-caught hake topped with pil-pil sauce and served with piperade.

Then comes the moment when the lifeguards' flags are lowered and the Blue Cargo gently transitions into sunset mode. From 6 pm onwards, plates circulate, a mix of street food and Basque touches, a glass in hand, facing the evening's spectacle. We settle onto the banquettes facing the sea, choose a cocktail from the extensive menu, and pair it with tapas designed for sharing. We start with the artichoke flower, absolutely irresistible, before moving on to the briny notes of Harenga oysters, then a detour to the charcuterie —it's impossible to resist a few slices of Bellota ham when you're in the Basque Country. The eyes feast as much as the palate, while live music accompanies the golden light that sets the ocean ablaze each evening.

As dusk falls and dinnertime approaches, the pace gently shifts. We ascend to the Villa's terraces, sheltered from the sea spray, to discover a more elegant menu with subtly modernized local touches: we begin with a crab gratin with piquillo pepper sauce, followed by duck breast with a red wine and honey jus, served with creamy polenta. Of course, we save room for the sweet treat —peach-almond pavlova, chocolate mousse, or a lighter strawberry soup —before heading back down to the dance floor for a few dances overlooking the ocean.

For their first summer at the helm of Blue Cargo, Paul and Baptiste have paid particular attention to the musical programming. When night falls, the beach transforms: the sand becomes a dance floor, the stars mingle with the bass, and the party stretches on until 2 a.m.
