    • TALAIA – The Basque walking stick for today's hikers

A handcrafted wooden walking stick from the Basque Country

In Anglet, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees Mountains, Eric Burel Etchegoin creates wooden walking sticks in his workshop-boutique. These sticks are understated, functional, and deeply rooted in Basque identity. His approach is simple: to reinvent the traditional walking tool, transforming it into a reliable, elegant companion built to last.

Inspired by the surrounding nature and the gestures of the ancients, Eric offers durable and comfortable ash wood hiking poles, intended for hikers, walkers, lovers of beautiful objects or local know-how.

A walking stick made of fine wood, designed for the terrain

Ash, selected for its mechanical qualities, is at the heart of every TALAIA creation. This light, supple, and resistant wood is worked using the Japanese Yakisugi method: a flame-burning technique that strengthens the wood while revealing its natural grain. This finish gives it a deep caramel hue, a pleasant texture, and natural protection against moisture.

Once sanded and oiled, the stick takes on its full dimension: light, solid and aesthetic, it becomes the ideal ally for all your outings, in the mountains, on coastal paths or in the forest.

A unique, customizable piece adapted to your needs.

Each TALAIA walking stick is made individually. No impersonal stock or standardized model: every detail can be chosen or adapted to your liking.

      Its main characteristics:

      • Solid ash wood, charred and then hand-oiled
      • Pommel in black horn, bone or "Manech" sheep horn, polished and fitted
      • Custom engraving is available on the pommel or brass ring (initials, symbol, motto, etc.)
      • Discreet and non-slip rubber tip, removable as needed
      • Clean lines, for a simple and comfortable fit
      • Available in 4 sizes, to fit all body shapes and walking styles

This walking stick isn't decorative by design; it's built for practical use, for uneven terrain, for long hikes or leisurely walks. But its finish also makes it an object of aesthetic value, one that can be proudly displayed at home.

      100% Basque handcrafted product

The name TALAIA, which means "lookout" in Basque, evokes both coastal surveillance and a gaze fixed on the horizon. It is also a way of asserting a local, demanding, and respectful manufacturing process, both for the wood and for the skills passed down through generations.

In Anglet, Eric works alone in his workshop, prioritizing quality, materials, and the relationship with each client. Each walking stick is the result of a carefully controlled manufacturing process, a rigorous selection of materials, and a constant desire to create a useful, understated, and timeless object.

By choosing a TALAIA walking stick, you are supporting authentic, local craftsmanship. You will leave with an object that will accompany you for a long time, because it was designed for that purpose: step after step, day after day.

Who is the TALAIA stick intended for?

      • For hikers : to relieve joint pain, balance pace, and improve walking safety
      • For everyday walkers : for a confident stroll, with secure support
      • For wood lovers : for the beauty of the material and the natural feel
      • For lovers of handcrafted goods : to own a unique object, the result of genuine and local work.
      • For those looking for a symbolic, elegant and lasting gift

Where can I buy a TALAIA walking stick?

Beware, you're entering the bear's den! This place is discreet, but overflowing with professionalism. A lover of distinctive knives, I was in heaven. My choice, an authentic shepherd's folding knife, was designed with Eric, assembled within a week, and shipped to my door. The Makila, hiking poles, and umbrellas are breathtaking in their meticulous and delicate craftsmanship. In short, a great place for lovers of fine blades. Eric is a good one.

Atelier intéressant d’un artiste super doué. Les couteaux, les bâtons de marche et les parapluies sont très beaux. Bravo Éric. Tu es très méritant. À la revoyure !
