    • The Makila: The Basque walking stick revisited by TALAIA

An iconic walking stick from the Basque Country, reimagined by craftsman Eric Burel Etchegoin

The Basque makila – which literally means "stick" in Basque – is a symbolic object deeply rooted in the history and traditions of the Basque Country.

Originally used by shepherds for walking, defending themselves or guiding their flocks, it has now become a traditional walking stick full of meaning, often given as a gift during significant events such as a birthday, a retirement or an official ceremony.

In his TALAIA workshop-boutique, located in Anglet between Biarritz and Bayonne, Eric Burel Etchegoin, artisan creator, reinterprets this mythical object with local know-how and a demand for quality.

His unique approach to the Basque handcrafted makila combines ancestral techniques with a contemporary, understated and elegant aesthetic.

      Exceptional craftsmanship and premium materials

Each TALAIA makila is entirely handcrafted. Eric selects high-quality ash wood, renowned for its strength and flexibility. He then applies the Yakisugi technique, a traditional Japanese charring method that hardens the wood, protects it naturally, and brings out its grain. After several stages of sanding and oiling, the wood develops a deep, warm caramel hue, the visual signature of TALAIA makilas.

Their clean designs highlight the natural line of the stick and the beauty of the raw wood.

The characteristics of the TALAIA makila

The TALAIA makila was designed to combine elegance, comfort, and durability. It stands out with its high-end finishes and extensive customization options.

      • Knob in solid bronze or stainless steel, turned from a single piece, customizable with an engraving (initials, motto, logo or symbol),
      • Burnt and oiled ash wood, without a handle, for a natural grip.
      • Discreet rubber tip, perfect for walking on hard or slippery surfaces.
      • Five sizes available, to fit all body types.

Each piece is unique, made to order.

The customer can thus choose the materials, engravings and dimensions to create a personalized makila, true to their desires or the story they wish to convey.

A Basque walking stick, somewhere between a utilitarian object and an exceptional piece.

Whether for hiking in the Pyrenees, strolling through the streets of the Basque Country or decorating an interior, the TALAIA makila adapts to all uses.

Without a weapon, it is perfectly legal in the city, in public places and on public transport.

It can also be displayed as a prestige object, carrying identity and emotion.

Giving a TALAIA makila is giving much more than a Basque walking stick : it is passing on a piece of history, territory and know-how.

It also means supporting local craftsmanship and choosing an authentic, sustainable product that is 100% made in the Basque Country.

The TALAIA makila: a symbolic, timeless and fully customizable gift

Thanks to its quality of manufacture and its strong symbolic value, the TALAIA makila is often chosen to mark important events: medal presentation, retirement, birthday, professional recognition, wedding, etc.

Each stick then becomes a unique gift, custom-designed and engraved according to the customer's wishes.

Eric also offers three specific models:

      • The Makila TALAIA, with a Basque cross (lauburu) in relief on the stainless steel pommel.
      • The TALAIA Makila d'Honneur, with a Basque cross (lauburu) in relief on the aged bronze pommel.
      • The Makila d'Honneur Zazpiak Bat, incorporating a bronze medal of the seven Basque provinces, made by the engraver Rodon, inlaid on an aged bronze pommel.

Beware, you're entering the bear's den! This place is discreet, but overflowing with professionalism. A lover of distinctive knives, I was in heaven. My choice, an authentic shepherd's folding knife, was designed with Eric, assembled within a week, and shipped to my door. The Makila, hiking poles, and umbrellas are breathtaking in their meticulous and delicate craftsmanship. In short, a great place for lovers of fine blades. Eric is a good one.
