    • Pozalagua Cave: A Unique Underground Cathedral in the World

In Bizkaia, nestled in the stunning Karrantza Valley within the Armañón Natural Park, the Pozalagua Cave is considered a true wonder of nature. Awarded the Repsol Guide's Best Corner in 2013, this cavern offers a mesmerizing experience that captivates all who venture into its depths.

It is a place where nature has patiently sculpted, with millennia of experience, a true work of art underground.

      An unprecedented geological phenomenon

What makes Pozalagua truly special is its highest concentration of helictites in the world. Unlike conventional stalactites that grow downwards due to gravity, helictites grow on the ceiling in any direction, defying gravity and creating a unique geological spectacle.

Geologists consider it one of the world's finest, not only for the number of these formations but also for their exceptional thickness and length. A true marvel of nature.

The cave was discovered by chance on December 28, 1957. A dynamite explosion at the adjacent dolomite quarry blasted a hole in the mountain, revealing this fascinating subterranean world. Today, that same hole serves as the entrance for visitors. To protect this treasure, the quarry was permanently closed in the 1970s, and the cave was opened to the public in 1991.

      The visit

It is an immersive experience that combines nature, science, and wonder.

From the moment you step through the door, you're immersed in a world that seems like another planet. The tour is a visual journey through stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstones, and helictites, culminating in a viewpoint that allows you to contemplate the grandeur of the entire formation in all its splendor.

An almost magical underground landscape where thousands of formations seem to float in the air as if they were natural sculptures.

      • Indoor climate: The temperature remains constant at around 13ºC throughout the year, so it is recommended to wear appropriate clothing.
      • The Pozalagua Amphitheater: Right in front of the grotto, carved into the old quarry, is an impressive auditorium with a capacity for 2,000 people, famous for its perfect acoustics and home to the Pozalagua Festival.
