    • THE CAVES OF ZUGARRAMURDI

The Zugarramurdi caves are a series of natural caverns located in the village of Zugarramurdi, in the Basque Country, very close to the Spanish border. This site is distinguished by its unique geology and its cultural history linked to popular beliefs and documented historical events. The surrounding landscape is typical of the pre-Pyrenean areas, with verdant valleys and gentle terrain.

      Historical and cultural context

The Zugarramurdi caves gained notoriety due to 17th-century historical accounts of witchcraft trials in the Kingdom of Navarre. These accounts are now being studied by historians who are recontextualizing these episodes within their social and cultural dimensions. A visit to the site allows visitors to explore these themes through explanatory panels and museum displays.

      Geological aspects

From a geological perspective, the Zugarramurdi caves are carved into limestone formations sculpted by water erosion over long periods. The interior galleries include narrow passages, natural vaults, and areas where the rock strata are visibly superimposed. The internal temperature remains relatively constant and cool throughout the year, characteristic of this type of natural cavern.

      Visit and activities

The site offers a marked walking trail allowing visitors to explore the different chambers of the Zugarramurdi caves. A visitor center and interpretation centre provide information on the geological formations, local wildlife, and the traditions and legends associated with the site. Guided tours are also available to offer further explanations and a deeper understanding of the site's unique features.

Currently, the cave is undergoing accessibility improvements. As part of this project, several guided tour slots are offered to allow visitors to discover the transformation and evolution of the site. Access to the cave is by prior reservation only and after receipt of the corresponding confirmation.

Tours take place from Wednesday to Sunday and depart from the Witch Museum. As places are limited, it is recommended to book online in advance.

During the renovation work, the Witch Museum is extending its opening hours and will welcome visitors from Tuesday to Sunday.

      Access and practical advice

Access to the Zugarramurdi Caves is on foot from the main car park, via a well-maintained path. Some areas may be wet or slightly slippery ; therefore , comfortable and appropriate footwear is recommended. The average visit lasts approximately one hour, depending on the pace of the visitors. During peak season, advance booking is recommended.

What to do in the surrounding area

Near the Zugarramurdi caves, you can visit the Witch Museum, which offers an in-depth look at local history and traditions. Hiking trails allow you to discover the surrounding nature, the verdant hills, and the traditional hamlets of the Basque Country. The proximity of the Spanish border also offers the opportunity to explore several Spanish villages known for their architectural heritage and diverse local cuisine.

The guide was lovely and explained everything very well. Although the witches' sabbath cave was under construction and we couldn't see it.
