Celebrate Halloween around Biarritz

Even if the Biarritz garden is most attractive with its disguise, it is not the only city that celebrates Halloween in the Basque Country. Hendaye , Urrugne , Bayonne , Ascain or Itxassou take advantage of the occasion to bring back into fashion a tradition dating back to the 50s : " Gau Belta ". Its name meaning " dark night ", this event is similar to Halloween, with a few variations. As in Biarritz, the streets are transformed into a place of fear and welcome parades of parents and children in disguise. The monsters then sow terror in the neighborhoods, like the old tradition which consisted of frightening demons to allow souls to return to death on the other side. The south of the Basque Country in its desire to defend the cultural identity of the territory , imposes its "Gau Beltza" but does not forget the conviviality of this Day of the Dead on the last weekend of October. In Urrugne or Hendaye, Halloween is also an opportunity to get together for a festive and gourmet program:

  • A snack for the children after the parade
  • Entertainment throughout the day and terrifying decorations
  • Face painting and squash carving workshops
  • Serving a pumpkin velouté to warm you up

"Gau Beltza" or Halloween, the Day of the Dead remains a tradition where children like to dress up, when fears take pleasure in scaring themselves.
