    • Founded in Bayonne in 1951 by Joseph and Madeleine Andrieu, L'Atelier du Chocolat is the creator of the Bouquet de Chocolat® and the Ateliers-Boutiques, a unique concept in the world of chocolatiers.

Living around chocolate, working with the material, discovering new sensory journeys, this is the tasty and delicious experience offered by L'Atelier du Chocolat, an unusual detour to the Basque Country.

Choosing Atelier du Chocolat means choosing high-quality chocolates, 100% pure cocoa butter, always made by our chocolatiers in our Bayonne production workshops.

Roasted hazelnuts, caramelized almonds, Espelette pepper powder, we put as much rigor into the selection of our raw materials as into our manufacturing processes.

Find all our Workshops-Boutiques in the Basque Country, where chocolate is transformed daily into thin sheets under the skillful gestures of chocolatiers. See our Workshops-Boutiques here.

We visited L'atelier du Chocolate on a Monday. They were working and making chocolates, which was lovely to see, as their chocolate-making process is very artisanal. We had a self-guided tour, and afterwards there was a tasting of five chocolates: two of them like bonbons, and the other three were pieces like small squares of chocolate. Each chocolate was accompanied by an explanation. Instead of a tasting, the children were given a chocolate bar in a specific shape to decorate and then take home as a souvenir and eat.

We had very fond memories of our visit about eight years ago. The museum remains unchanged, which makes it feel a bit underwhelming. It's nice to see the chocolatiers at work, but if you visit when they're not there, it's less worthwhile. The film is only subtitled in French, something easily improved and standardized with the other signs, which are available in other languages. Our disappointment stems mainly from the tasting, which, while decent, is nothing like it used to be, where you could sample 20 different types of chocolate. Today, there were only five (70%, 97%, sesame, and the two specialty varieties). The difference is significant (although it's worth noting that the price difference has only been 80 cents over the years). The best part of the entire visit, without a doubt, was the staff. They were very friendly, welcoming, and all spoke Spanish. The children's workshop, where the kids painted a monkey, was also a nice touch. In short: if it's raining or you've already seen everything Bayonne has to offer, go for it. Otherwise, I think I'd skip it (unless they expand the tasting again). The shop is expensive, but they have a great variety of chocolates, and they're delicious.
