A region's history shapes its character… Understanding the major events and anecdotes of the past allows you to better grasp the identity of a territory . Visiting certain iconic places is an immersive experience that lets you delve into the heart of a country !

  • Biarritz Historical Museum : You will learn all about the history of the city of Biarritz , by exploring several themed areas : the sea, the empire, Biarritz in the world, the 20th century.
  • The Bishops' Prison in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: This building housed the bishops of Bayonne during the " Great Western Schism ," without imprisoning them... But it later served as a prison, hence its name! You will find a permanent exhibition on pilgrims and the " Routes of Santiago de Compostela " and temporary exhibitions.

  • Saraleguinea Museum in Guéthary : Thanks to the works and donations of the renowned sculptor Georges Clément de Swiecinski , you can journey through the history of Guéthary , as seen by the artist, from the Roman remains of the fishing village to its transformation, in the 20th century, into a fashionable spa town . Sculptures by Claude Viseux and Dominique André, and mosaics by Michel Duboscq, adorn the magnificent grounds of this neo-Basque residence .
  • Witch Museum: Zugarramurdi is known as the " village of witches ." Since time immemorial, its mysterious caves have been the site of rituals and sabbaths .   • The Bonnat-Helleu Museum of Fine Arts in Bayonne (closed for renovations, reopening in 2025): This is a very comprehensive visit to the fine arts. You will find 7,000 works classified by category: antiquities, decorative arts, tapestries, paintings, sculptures, photographs, graphic arts, coins and medals… It is also the only French museum, with the exception of the Louvre, where you can admire works by Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo !
