La Marine, your futur ...

Episode 4 - Week 4

It’s the height of summer and we’re continuing our tour of the Basque Country’s new hotspots: one a week, just for you. Last week, we dined at Pluma, the new restaurant at the Café de Paris, where we shared grilled dishes whilst looking out over the Biarritz lighthouse. Episode 4, and this time we’re dropping anchor on Rue Mazagran.

La Marine, your future home port

Just steps from the Port Vieux beach, two friends took over a legendary spot in a month and a half. The result? A place with heart, unpretentious, with honest, high-quality dishes.

In Biarritz, La Marine casts off and raises its new flag high. Taken over in barely a month and a half by two friends, Tancrède and El Piex, the place begins its first crossing under a new flag, and already the crew can be proud of the milestone reached.

At 28 rue Mazagran, a stone's throw from the Port Vieux beach, this former haunt, well-known to Biarritz locals, has reinvented itself as a cheerful, unpretentious place to hang out, from lunch to long, leisurely drinks. Here, everything exudes the feeling of a place for friends, the kind of spot where you drop in unannounced and end up staying longer than planned.

From the past, they have preserved the soul of the place and this imposing bar, now dressed in stainless steel, which reflects the light like a chrome ship's deck, industrial and festive, as well as a few trinkets and whims inherited from the former owners, including an anchor reminding us that here the sea is never far away.

In this tastefully crafted setting, where the boys unearthed on Leboncoin a joyful mix of mismatched furniture, bistro chairs and tables with red and white accents, there reigns a frank camaraderie and a happy chaos which opens up both the thirst and the appetite, a perfect prelude to the drinks menu and the food menu.

To steer their ship, they've brought Lou on board, a traveling chef and incredibly talented. From Thursday to Sunday, she sends out dishes of apparent simplicity, but behind which the ingredients and the work are evident, and which regulars have already fallen in love with.

The menu evolves according to what she puts in her basket : classic eggs mayonnaise topped with trout roe, green beans in tonnato sauce that make vegetables irresistibly appealing, or a stunningly fresh bluefin tuna crudo. And because La Marine also knows how to talk about "glucose," it's impossible to ignore the decadent tiramisu, served with two spoons to avoid any table disputes.

On the wine side, the selection is just as accurate: a focused wine selection, from white to orange wine and a few local beers to accompany the sunset that timidly appears at the end of the street and finishes filling the heart when the stomach has already been full for a long time.

La Marine is already shaping up to be your future home port : the promise of a warm welcome, full glasses, delightful plates and, frankly, that's all we need.
