Discover the authentic tradition of cider houses in the Basque Country

Immerse yourself in the heart of the Basque Country and experience an authentic experience at the Berri Cider House, a true "sagarnotegia" producer cider house located in Ascain, a few minutes from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Sare, Espelette, Biarritz and the Spanish border.

More than just a visit, we invite you to discover an ancestral know-how passed down through generations. Here, apples are transformed to make Sagarno, the famous traditional Basque cider, also called "apple wine," considered the oldest drink in the Basque Country.

      An immersion in Basque culture

During your visit, you will discover all the stages of Sagarno production: the choice of apple varieties, pressing, natural fermentation, aging and preservation in the famous kupela, the large wooden barrels that contain the Basque cider until it is tasted.

You will understand why kupelas hold an essential place in the cider houses of the Basque Country. Much more than simple barrels, each kupela is the symbol of ancestral know-how and the Basque cider-making tradition.

The most anticipated moment remains the famous TXOTX. At the cellar master's signal, visitors go directly to the kupela (cider bowls) to taste the Sagarno ( cider) that flows naturally from the barrel. This tasting directly from the kupela is an essential tradition that has made Basque cider houses famous for centuries.

      Tasting of our artisanal drinks

The visit also includes a tasting of our products made directly at the cider house:

      • Traditional Sagarno
      • Artisanal apple juice
      • All our drinks are handcrafted from carefully selected apples. You can compare the different aromatic profiles of Sagarno while discovering the essential role of the kupela (apple-shaped molds) in its aging and maturation.

      The real Txotx meal

After the visit, extend your discovery with the traditional Txotx meal, a true institution in the cider houses of the Basque Country.

The meal is punctuated by several openings of kupela, allowing diners to taste different Sagarno directly from the barrel, as is the Basque tradition. Each kupela reveals its own aromas and characteristics, offering a unique tasting experience.

Our restaurant offers classic Basque cuisine:

      • Cod omelet
      • Koskera-style cod
      • Rib steak (Txuleta)
      • Duck breast
      • Homemade fries
      • Traditional desserts

All our dishes are prepared on site with local products to perfectly complement the various Sagarnos enjoyed at the kupela.

      An ideal activity for groups

A visit to the Berri Cider House is particularly appreciated by tourist groups, coach operators, travel agencies, associations, CSEs (Social and Economic Committees), works councils, sports clubs, families, companies as well as groups of friends wishing to experience a true immersion in the traditions of the Basque Country.

Thanks to its prime location in Ascain, near Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Sare, Espelette, and Biarritz, the Berri Cider House welcomes numerous visitors each year who come to discover Sagarno, witness the Txotx ritual, taste cider directly from the kupela (cider jug), and share a traditional meal in a genuine Basque cider house. This experience allows visitors to understand the history of the kupela, the production of Sagarno, and the importance of cider making in the heritage of the Basque Country.
